What is OpenSocial?

In November of 2007 Google unveiled their plan to facilitate the development of social applications. Their initiative, called OpenSocial, is a documented standard that software creators interface with. Applications that follow these guidelines will be able to function on any participating Social Network. The following networks are currently building the necessary infrastructure to support OpenSocial: MySpace; Engage.com; Friendster; hi5; Hyves; imeem; LinkedIn; Ning; Oracle; orkut; Plaxo; Salesforce.com; Six Apart; Tianji; Viadeo; and XING.

The OpenSocial platform is an alternative to the Facebook platform. Although there are a number of large supporters behind this intiative, it is still in its infancy. Only the orkut network currently supports OpenSocial applications. However, if you are interested in future planning, now is the perfect time to start thinking about OpenSocial.
